The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) conducts, fosters, and supports research that advance the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of neurological disorders and stroke.
Learn about the NINDS organizational structure and functions of the offices and divisions that support the Institute's mission.
Office of the Director (OD)
The Office of the Director (OD) determines Institute programs, plans, and policies and provides management, program analysis, and scientific program reporting services to the Institute, as well as scientific leadership, policy guidance, and overall operational and administrative coordination, including across the activities of the extramural and intramural divisions.
Division of Extramural Activities
The Division of Extramural Activities (DEA) coordinates the NINDS extramural program. The Programmatic Operations Team oversees the receipt and referral of NINDS applications, development of new funding opportunities (NOFOs), administration of NINDS programs such as the R35 and RM1, and process and programmatic analysis.
Division of Clinical Research (DCR)
The Division of Clinical Research provides oversight for clinical trials to test the safety and efficacy of innovative treatments of neurological disorders and stroke, epidemiological studies of natural history, biomarker studies, and studies designed to elucidate the causes of neurological disorders; develops new clinical science initiatives, maintains the scientific integrity of clinical trials, and provides expertise in statistics and clinical trial design to the Institute and to clinical investigators.
Division of Intramural Research (DIR)
The Division of Intramural Research (DIR) is among the largest neuroscience research centers in the world. It is home to more than 500 scientists who conduct leading-edge basic, translational, and clinical research in neuroscience, neurology, and neurosurgery in Bethesda, Maryland.
Division of Neuroscience (DN)
The Division of Neuroscience (DON) plans and directs a program of extramural and collaborative research in neuroscience, guiding NINDS’ largest research portfolio and charting the future of a vibrant, growing neuroscience research community.
Division of Translational Research (DTR)
The Division of Translational Research (DTR) accelerates basic research findings toward patient use for neurological disorders and stroke by providing funding, expertise, and resources to the research community.
Office of Scientific Management and Operations (OSMO)
The Office of Scientific Management and Operations (OSMO) accelerates the advancement of neuroscience through proactive leadership, guidance, and comprehensive support, fostering the integration of science, management, and operations within the Institute and across its diverse range of scientific initiatives.
Office of the BRAIN Director (OBD)
The Office of the BRAIN Director (OBD) oversees the NIH Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies® Initiative, or The BRAIN Initiative®, which is aimed at revolutionizing our understanding of the human brain.
