The Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP) advances the NIH mission by supporting infrastructure for innovation—the Division of Comparative Medicine supports research-related resource programs, and the Division of Construction and Instruments supports research infrastructure.

Council of Councils

The NIH Council of Councils (COC), Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI), conducts the legally required second level of review prior to any award made by ORIP.

Small Business

ORIP participates in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program.

Funding

ORIP supports infrastructure for innovation in multiple areas: the development and maintenance of animal models and related resources for biomedical researchers, the modernization of research infrastructure through programs that provide access to advanced scientific instruments and equipment, and career development and training programs designed to increase the expertise and diversity of investigators working with animal resources.

Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM)

Comparative medicine plays an essential role in biomedical discovery by looking for similarities and differences between disease in humans and animals.

Division of Construction and Instruments (DCI)

DCI supports research infrastructure in three areas: the S10 Instrumentation Programs (acquisition of state-of-the-art research instruments), the S15 Equipment Program (acquisition of modern research or auxiliary equipment to enhance operations of shared-use biomedical research facilities, formerly under the R24 activity code), and Extramural Construction Programs (construction and modernization of research facilities).
