The third step of the grant submission process - review details with the trainee.
Set expectations with the trainee
Many ICs have SOPs that they provide to their own trainees who are considering submitting a grant. Examples of these SOPs are housed here (link coming soon)- they include setting expectations with the trainee about various internal deadlines, including but not limited to:
- Gaining their supervisor’s approval for writing and submitting a grant;
- Creating an ORCiD (required for submission)
- When to notify the Training Office that the trainee is planning for a particular submission deadline (this gives the office time to ensure that all registrations are up to date);
- Contacting the appropriate extramural Program Officer;
- Asking the Training Office to either create a new eRA Commons profile or affiliate an existing account with your IC;
- When to start writing/editing, and recommending they attend a grant-writing workshop;
- Internal deadlines for submission to Training Director/AOR via either ASSIST or grants.gov. We recommend having an earlier internal deadline than the grant submission deadline to account for errors or system issues;
- The post-submission process and next steps.
