Offices and Divisions

NIMH funds research by scientists across the country as well as in NIMH studies in the internal research program. Through its extramural program, NIMH supports more than 4,000 research grants and contracts at universities and other institutions across the country and overseas. Investigators propose projects themselves through grant applications and must apply for renewals at intervals in order to receive continued funding.

Approximately 650 scientists work in the NIMH intramural research program. Intramural scientists range from molecular biologists working in laboratories to clinical researchers working with patients at the NIH Clinical Center. Although guided by a rigorous peer review system, intramural scientists are accorded unique flexibility in rapidly following up research leads and unexpected opportunities. Also, because it involves basic science as well as clinical trials, the program is structured to facilitate interdisciplinary studies.

Office of the NIMH Director

The Office of the NIMH Director is responsible for defining Institute programs, plans, and policies, and provides management, program analysis, and scientific leadership.

Division of Neuroscience and Basic Behavioral Science (DNBBS)

The Division of Neuroscience and Basic Behavioral Science (DNBBS) provides support for research programs in the areas of basic neuroscience, genetics, basic behavioral science, research training, resource development, technology development, drug discovery, and research dissemination.

Division of Translational Research (DTR)

The DTR directs, plans, and supports programs of research and research training that translate knowledge from basic science to discover the etiology, pathophysiology, and trajectory of mental disorders and develops effective interventions for children and adults.

Division of AIDS Research (DAR)

The Division of AIDS Research (DAR) supports research to reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS worldwide and to decrease the burden of living with HIV.

Division of Services and Intervention Research (DSIR)

The Division of Services and Intervention Research (DSIR) supports programs of research and research training that aim to accelerate translation of research findings from basic and clinical studies to real-world practice settings and communities, where findings can be applied to improve public health.

Division of Extramural Activities (DEA)

The Division of Extramural Activities leads and coordinates extramural programs and policies, provides grant guidance, oversees advisory council and FACA activities, and manages grant awards and compliance throughout the grant lifecycle.

Division of Intramural Research Programs (IRP)

NIMH IRP conducts state-of-the-art research that utilizes the unique resources of NIH, provides an environment conducive to the training and development of clinical and basic scientists, and in part, complements extramural research activities

Center for Global Mental Health Research (CGMHR)

CGMHR-supported research leverages global settings essential to accelerating scientific discovery at NIMH by harnessing diverse, real-world data to continuously improve mental health outcomes in the United States and abroad.

Division of Data Science and Technology (DST)

The Division of Data Science and Technology (DST) supports basic and applied research related to the development of scientific tools, technologies, and approaches related to brain and behavioral research.
