Collaborative Research on Addiction at NIH (CRAN) | NIAAA

Collaborative Research on Addiction at the National Institutes of Health (CRAN) is a trans-NIH initiative to promote collaborative research on addiction.

Mission Statement

The mission of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) partnership, Collaborative Research on Addiction at NIH (CRAN), is to provide a strong collaborative framework to enable the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to integrate resources and expertise to advance substance use, misuse, and addiction research and public health outcomes.

Governing Structure

The governing structure of CRAN consists of:

• A Steering Committee comprising the Directors of NIAAA, NIDA, and the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences at NCI
• A Coordinating Committee designated by the Steering Committee and staffed by representatives from each lead institute.

Activities

• Facilitate collaborative research on substance use, misuse, addiction, and related health consequences.
• Convene an annual joint council meeting comprising NIAAA and NIDA council members, with representation from NCI.
• Provide researchers and other stakeholders with web-based information funding opportunities and relevant news and events.

In addition to the activities mentioned above, the three institutes have numerous formal and informal collaborations to foster more effective communication between institute staff and to improve knowledge exchange among diverse scientific communities.

CRAN was formed in early 2013 and under the leadership of NIAAA, NIDA, and NCI, is progressing in its mission to support dynamic and innovative substance use, abuse and health outcome-oriented science.
