K08: Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Awards

The Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award program (K08) is an award for junior clinicians with little-to-moderate research training who wish to become independent clinician-scientists trained in basic research in aging.

Early career investigators should also consider other Career Development Awards and research grants for Early Stage Investigators .

K08 at a Glance

  • Eligibility Requirements: Clinical doctoral degree, U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Award Duration: Three to five years
  • Due Dates: Feb. 12/March 12, June 12/July 12, Oct. 12/Nov. 12
  • Budget: Up to $100,000 salary and $25,000 research support
  • Questions? Contact NIATraining@mail.nih.gov

Due dates for resubmissions are one month later than for initial submissions.

Similar to the K23 , the K08 trains aspiring clinician-scientists to become independent researchers. Unlike the K23, the research proposed on a K08 application can be on any topic related to aging, including working with animal models, on basic biology, on secondary data analysis, or even on advancement of theory.

K08 Awards Supported by NIA

NIA supports two different K08 awards: the NIH parent announcements and a Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) announcements. Both awards include multiple versions depending on the type of study proposed (clinical trial, non-clinical trial, basic experimental studies in humans).
