Incontinence is a leading chronic condition for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), because of a decrease in mobility, deterioration of daily activities, and neurological decline that contributes to the loss of bladder control and sensory organs. Incontinence complications include urinary tract infections, which manifest as increased confusion, agitation, or withdrawal in patients with ADRD. When infections go undetected, more life-threatening complications can arise in the kidneys or bloodstream. Managing incontinence and maintaining skin integrity when moisture is present are constant challenges for health care providers and family members of patients with ADRD, as well as significant financial burdens.

One in 10 older adults in the United States will experience incontinence. Wicked Sheets is specifically interested in older adults who reside in assisted living communities, which represent a $2 billion market opportunity.

The Wicked Smart Pad is a washable bed pad with sensors that detect moisture and alert caregivers in real time when an incontinence event occurs. It is the first of its kind — a reusable bed pad that has real-time moisture detection, alert monitoring, and data analysis.
