The majority of Alzheimer’s disease patients suffer from neurovascular deficits, which has important implications for disease monitoring and treatment planning. Neurovascular pathologies negatively affect the clearance of protein aggregations and metabolic waste from the brain; if exacerbated, those pathologies increase the likelihood of cerebral bleeding or stroke. Currently, there is no established diagnosis and monitoring tool to assess brain neurovascular and clearance system health. The limited options available require neuroradiologic visual scoring, which is both extremely time-consuming and unreliable. These limitations hinder the ability to assess neurovascular health for diagnosis or assess the therapeutics’ efficacy.

NeuroScope Inc. has developed fully automated quantitative tools using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess neurovascular health and brain clearance systems reliably and efficiently. These tools are available via our business-to-business (B2B) cloud-based service. Our solution enables (1) improved patient enrollment, enrichment, and subtyping in clinical trial settings and (2) cost-efficient diagnostics aid for neuroradiologists.

The main consumers of NeuroScope’s technologies are the neuroradiology sector and pharmaceutical industry, and the company will provide cost-efficient precision medicine imaging markers to pharmaceutical companies and neuroradiology departments. The Global Alzheimer’s Disease Diagnostic Market is expected to reach $18.76 billion by 2028. On the clinical cognitive impairment and dementia diagnosis spectrum, vascular dementia accounts for roughly 20% of all dementia, or a $3.75 billion share of the market. NeuroScope has no known competitor at present and upon U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval will initially target 40% of the U.S. market.

Current clinical neuroradiology workflows for assessing the brain clearance system are manual and extremely time-consuming. This has a severe impact on turnaround times for radiology reports. Using NeuroScope’s fully automated cloud-based service reduces turnaround time from hours to a few minutes, with proven superior accuracy.

Company Milestones

Scientific and Clinical

  • 2018: Brain clearance mapping intellectual property was developed, and the preprint was released. The findings from this technology were featured in Discover magazine.
  • 2019: Technological and scientific advances were developed for brain clearance assessment and led to the publication of the research in high-impact scientific journals. Initial testing of the brain clearance assessment technology on Alzheimer’s patients was conducted.
  • 2020: The technology showed clinical significance with Alzheimer’s disease.
  • 2021: The technology was featured in the Nature Neurology journal. Initial testing of the technology in Parkinson’s disease data was conducted.
  • 2022: Clinical validation was presented at the International Conference on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Diseases and related neurological disorders (AD/PD™ 2022). The technology was used to study a National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut’s brain, and the results were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Business

  • 2019: NeuroScope was incorporated. A provisional patent was submitted.
  • 2020: The patent was submitted. NeuroScope was accepted for NIH Applicant Assistance Program mentorship.
  • 2021: The company received pre-seed Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase I funding for $0.46 million from NIA.
  • 2022, Q4: B2B cloud-based service will be ready for deployment.

Financial Overview

NeuroScope Inc. has raised $461,000 from NIH-NIA for STTR Phase I funding. The company is currently seeking funding for an FDA application. NeuroScope plans to raise seed and nondilutive funding for use with further development and evaluation of its regulatory strategy.

Intellectual Property

The company’s intellectual property includes a patent pending:

Sepehrband F and Choupan J — United States Patent Application 17/176,725, 2021.

Mapping Brain Perivascular Spaces. Patent pending — Publication date: August 19, 2021.

Product Development and Regulatory Strategy

NeuroScope is continuously working to advance the brain clearance assessment service using clinical datasets through collaboration with neuroradiologists, academic partners, and international leaders in this field. The company is now preparing the 510(k) Submission Application for the brain clearance assessment service for submission to FDA.

Commercialization Strategy

NeuroScope’s commercialization strategy is to build a business development team and a marketing strategy that targets clinical trials in pharmaceutical companies. In addition, through academic and industry partnership and joint projects, NeuroScope is expanding its user network and eventually its market share.
