Office of Special Populations FAQs

How can the NIA Office of Special Populations (OSP) help me?

The NIA OSP seeks to assist emerging scholars in the development of careers that are devoted to genetic, clinical, behavioral, social and economic research on aging. The NIA OSP also looks to disseminate information about health disparities and promote research on these disparities within NIA and in the context of NIH-wide efforts. This mission is accomplished through technical assistance webinars, professional consultation, attendance at national meetings/conferences and the NIA Butler-Williams Scholars Program.

What is the NIA Butler- Williams Scholars Program and how do I apply?

The Butler-Williams Scholars Program (formerly the Summer Institute on Aging Research) includes lectures, seminars, and small group discussions in research design relative to aging, including issues relevant to aging of ethnic and racial minorities. Lectures cover topics in research on aging, including: the biology of aging; genetics and Alzheimer’s disease; and health, behavior, and aging. Discussion sessions will focus on methodological approaches and interventions. The program also includes consultation on the development of research interests and advice on preparing and submitting research grant applications to NIA. The B-W Scholars Program is sponsored by NIA with support from the National Hartford Centers of Gerontological Nursing Excellence.

Applications are accepted from emerging researchers, including those who may have limited involvement in aging research. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, noncitizen national, or lawfully admitted for permanent residence. Applicants are also asked to submit the a (1) typed statement describing desired objectives in attending the B-W Scholars Program, (2) Letters of recommendation from two people who are familiar with your professional interests and scholastic achievements, (3) One-page research proposal abstract, describing research hypothesis or questions, significance of research, and proposed approach to include a plan for analysis, (4) a copy of a recent resume or curriculum vitae.

An online application form is used to apply, with a yearly deadline in March/April. (Registration for this event is now closed.)

What is the Office of Special Population’s approach to health disparities in aging research?

NIA OSP seeks to promote the consideration of health disparities by encouraging aging research that investigates differences in life expectancy among American populations and research that identifies factors that lead to variances in health status among Americans age 65 and older.

The NIA Office of Special Populations will increase its promotion of disparities research directly, working specifically across NIH and with its National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. We also hope to track NIA’s progress for supporting research on factors that diminish lifespan and health among specific groups of Americans.
