- Launch at least one research program to advance the discovery of resilience-based precision therapeutics through the development of cross-species integrative computational models and the use of bio-realistic 3D tissue culture models.
Summary of Key Accomplishments
Resilience-based agents, which work to maintain cognitive function independently, are an emerging class of therapeutics for AD/ADRD, and NIA supports a growing portfolio of research on these therapies. For example, NIA is supporting development of an interpretable artificial intelligence model to identify biological pathways associated with cognitive resilience and to suggest potential treatment approaches. Elsewhere, NIA-funded investigators are working to identify the mechanism of action of t-BG, a small molecule that supports regenerative process in the brain. Because t-BG also affects how iron is used in the cell, this study will provide insights into the relationship between neurotrophic changes and iron levels and may suggest new therapeutic targets for AD/ADRD.
