Summary of Key Accomplishments

NIA launched the Building Neuroscience Research Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and AD-Related Dementias (ADRD) in Africa. Through this initiative, NIA supports 1) transformative collaborations between scientists and institutions in the United States and low- and middle-income countries in Africa; 2) research on how social or behavioral factors influence AD/ADRD in Africa; and 3) pilot or exploratory studies to inform future research for AD/ADRD neuroscience in Africa. By supporting the development of research infrastructure in Africa, NIA expects to contribute to building sustainable AD/ADRD neuroscience research capacity and research that will result in prevention and mitigation strategies for AD/ADRD in Africa. Current research includes an intervention that uses a portable low-field brain magnetic resonance imaging for ADRD in a rural community; the creation of tools for dementia diagnostics and identification of region-specific determinants of cognitive impairment and decline; and research to improve dementia screening, diagnosis and care.

The key accomplishments summary is current as of September 2025.
