- Establish a minimum of three (3) research programs applying AI/deep learning approaches to enabling precision medicine research including dementia subtyping, biomarker discovery and the development of personalized interventions.
- Ensure that these programs utilize data from diverse cohorts to ensure that AI/deep learning works well for individuals of all ancestries and demographics.
Summary of Key Accomplishments
NIA has supported several research programs and funding initiatives related to AI and deep learning approaches for discovery and translational research. The Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratories for Aging Research (AITC) program is designed to serve as a national resource to promote the development and implementation of AI approaches and technology through demonstration projects to improve care and health outcomes for older Americans. AITC supports pilot studies and disseminates policies and best practices for effectively incorporating AI approaches for older Americans.
NIA also announced funding opportunities, including one that invites projects that propose to apply existing or newly developed AI/ML methods to various aspects of drug discovery and pre-clinical drug development to accelerate the identification, optimization, and selection of pre-clinical drug candidates for the treatment and prevention of AD.
The key accomplishments summary is current as of September 2025.
