Are you passionate about science? Do you want to explore biomedical research? Would you like the opportunity to connect with leading scientific researchers? If yes, we encourage 9th to 11th graders to apply for the Shock Academy for Introduction to Laboratory Skills (SAILS) Camp.
The NIA SAILS Camp is a three-day training program tailored for high school students, to introduce them to the field of aging science. Participants will explore various research topics related to aging, including Alzheimer's disease and dementia, musculoskeletal health, cardiovascular health, genetics, and health disparities. The program will introduce students to essential research skills in areas like data science and effective science communication.
During the camp, students will have the opportunity to explore aging research and interact with primary investigators, as well as staff scientists, postbaccalaureate fellows, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and summer interns.
The camp will include lectures and interactive activities to:
- Develop essential science skills
- Explore biomedical research at NIA
- Familiarize students with advanced research tools and techniques
- Engage in discussions with scientists about their career paths
- Introduce topics like DNA, cardiovascular health, and brain histology
- Connect with fellow aspiring scientists
- Learn about additional training programs at NIA
The mission of SAILS is to motivate young students and inspire them to explore careers in biomedical science and aging research. Furthermore, it aims to provide them with skills necessary to be successful in their future academic endeavors.
