On April 25, 2024, the Board on Health Care Services of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) convened an expert panel to discuss ways to improve measurement and data quality in Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) research. The panel’s four presenters outlined their strategies for analyzing electronic health record (EHR), medical claims data, and digital health data using methods that most closely emulate randomized controlled trials to infer causal relationships.
After the presentations, panel members and meeting participants discussed strategies to mitigate bias in health care services research, translate health care services research findings for broader applications, and improve the aggregation and quality of EHR data. They also discussed the potential risks and benefits of using artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools for health care services research.
The workshop summary is forthcoming.
