Food Insecurity and Cognitive Health: State of the Science and Research Gaps

Audience

The target audience is NIH and NIA staff, other federal partners, and members of the research community, including faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and trainees with interests in cognition, aging, food insecurity, and social determinants of health.

Date

August 3, 2026 | 1-5 p.m. ET

Location

This webinar will be hosted virtually.

Purpose and Background

This half-day, virtual workshop will convene experts in aging, cognition, nutrition, and social determinants of health to assess the current state of the science on food insecurity and cognitive health, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). Given recent advances in data availability and analytic approaches, this workshop will evaluate how close the field is to consensus, identify critical knowledge gaps, and highlight barriers to progress such as measurement challenges and data limitations.

To achieve these objectives, the workshop activities will:

  • Take stock of the evidence base linking food insecurity to cognitive outcomes
  • Identify high-priority research questions for future investigation
  • Discuss methodological and data-related barriers limiting progress
  • Inform future NIH/NIA research priorities related to social determinants of health and cognitive aging
