Biological Resources for Aging Research

The Biological Resources Branch of DAB facilitates basic research in the biology of aging through controlled access to biological resources, which are supported through contracts to spare qualified investigators the cost of generating such resources. The available resources include aged rodents, biological specimens (tissue and cell banks), and the Primate Aging Database. Detailed information about biological resources available through the DAB may be found using the links below.

Aging Cell Repository

Sponsored by the NIA and located at the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, the Aging Cell Repository aims to facilitate cellular and molecular research studies on the mechanisms of aging and the degenerative processes associated with aging. Cells available through this repository have been collected over the past three decades using strict diagnostic criteria and banked under high quality standards of cell culture. To learn more about the available cells and the ordering process, please visit the Aging Cell Repository website .

Multigenotypic Aged Mouse and Rat Colonies

NIA maintains colonies of barrier-raised, Specific Pathogen-Free (SPF) rodents under contractual agreement with commercial vendors, explicitly for use in aging research. To learn more about this resource and how to order animals, please visit this website .

Aged Rodent Tissue Bank

NIA has developed a repository of tissue collected from the Multigenotypic Aged Rodent Colonies. Tissues are available to investigators at academic and nonprofit research institutions who are engaged in funded research on aging. To learn more about available samples and eligibility criteria, please visit this website .

Primate Aging Database

The Primate Aging Database (PAD) is a searchable database that contains body composition, blood chemistry, and other biological data collected across the lifespans of healthy non-human primates (NHPs) in captive and in wild populations. The PAD was developed to study aging in NHPs and can be used to study species and sex differences in normal aging processes, the impact of diet and environment on aging, biomarkers of aging, and to establish a normal range for comparison to values obtained from experimental or diseased groups. To access or submit data, please visit the PAD website .

Nonhuman Primate Tissue Bank

NIA has developed a repository of tissues collected from nonhuman primate species. The aim of this repository is to provide tissues and maximize the use of existing samples from non-human primates for aging research. To learn more about the available samples and eligibility criteria, please visit this website .
