The growing potential for disease-modifying drugs for aging-related conditions
Over recent decades researchers have made tremendous progress in understanding the biological mechanisms of aging. We now have evidence that fundamental aging mechanisms play key roles in multiple aging-related conditions. This scientific progress promotes an exciting therapeutic possibility: drugs that target underlying aging biology to prevent or modify disease.
The challenge? Translating research findings into therapeutics requires specialized expertise, infrastructure, and funding that often falls outside the scope of traditional academic research or standard NIH grants. NIA needs the community’s input on possible strategies to overcome barriers to developing drugs for aging-related conditions.
That's why we've issued a Request for Information (RFI) to assess the development pipeline for novel, disease-modifying drugs targeting aging-related conditions. We want to hear from academics, entrepreneurs, and anyone else developing disease-modifying therapeutics for one or more aging-related conditions. We’re looking to learn:
- The therapeutic modalities you are pursuing, and for which conditions
- The barriers to drug development you’re experiencing on the ground
- How NIA could best aid in overcoming these barriers
Ready to share your perspective?
Make sure your response is submitted by the July 1, 2026 deadline.
