If you’re a motivated scientist working to establish an independent aging research career, be sure to apply to the Butler-Williams (B-W) Scholars Program by March 31!
NIA has offered the B-W Scholars Program, formerly known as the Summer Institute on Aging Research, since 1987. Through this program, we provide a unique, hands-on, immersive career development opportunity to hone research skills while being inspired by successful independent investigators from multiple fields. Scholars can expect to improve their understanding of NIA-funded projects and related awards, refine scientific review skills, and connect with a national alumni network and aging research societies.
The intensive learning experience is intended for postdoctoral and early-stage investigators pursuing a training award, career development award, or their first R01 or R01 equivalent. The program is also open to scientists from nonaging-related fields who are interested in advancing the health of older adults and who want to transition into an independently funded aging research career.
This program is led by the NIA Office of Special Populations and is a crucial component of our institute’s broad efforts to promote rigorous aging research that addresses persistent factors that may impede healthy aging, and help to eliminate health disparities.
An immersive curriculum
The immersive B-W Scholars curriculum blends seminars, presentations, small team discussions, and networking. Participants will connect with NIA leadership, scientific review and program staff, and NIA-supported researchers. The 2025 curriculum will cover:
- Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias
- Application of the NIA Health Disparities Framework in the development of a new study
- Basic biology of aging
- Behavioral and social science research
- Geriatrics and clinical gerontology
- Guidance on developing research interests
- Neuroscience of aging
- Overview of NIA awards
- Scientific review of NIH grant applications
