For top researchers and scientific teams, now is the time to make an impact on the future of aging biology research. Attend the pre-application webinar on Tuesday, April 9, 2-3 p.m. ET, and then apply by June 14 to be a Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging or by June 15 to lead the related national coordinating center .
Advancing biology of aging research
For nearly 30 years, NIA has supported a network of Nathan Shock Centers (NSCs) across the country. Inspired by gerontology leader Nathan W. Shock, Ph.D. , the NSCs provide state-of-the-art research infrastructure and services to study the biology of aging. They also offer researchers newer to the field of aging pilot project funding and career development opportunities .
New RFA: Expanding the research focus
The latest NSC funding opportunity has broadened the spectrum of research focus areas to reflect how recent technological changes have advanced our understanding of the biology of aging. Examples of new areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Drivers or “hallmarks” of aging, including mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, etc.
- Metrics of aging, including biomarkers, clocks, computer-based modeling, imaging, etc.
- Aging biology across the life course
- Differences and similarities in aging between species (comparative biology of aging)
- Medicinal chemistry for drug development
- New technologies for in vitro systems
- Aiding translation to clinical research
- Linking environmental and social factors with the biology of aging
NSC Coordinating Center also open for applications
In addition, NIA is seeking applications for the Nathan Shock Centers Coordination Center (NSC3). The NSC3 is a focal point of the NSCs and requires motivated scientists and team players capable of coordinating across all of the NSC sites. I strongly encourage prospective applicants to email me early with your application questions.
Apply this June
We wish all interested teams good luck and remind them to attend the April 9 webinar and apply by June 14 for NSCs and by June 15 for the NSC coordinating center!
