Getting early-stage researchers REDI for modern biomedical careers

Over the last three decades, the tenure-track faculty position has become a less common career outcome for Ph.D. candidates upon graduation. Some biomedical researchers are instead graduating with an interest in entrepreneurship and other non-tenure-track careers that require, to best succeed, unique skill sets and an understanding of several related scientific and health care fields.

To help better prepare researchers for the full spectrum of modern career options, NIA is excited to continue the Research and Entrepreneurial Development Immersion (REDI) program . REDI is an umbrella program encompassing several training awards designed to develop a wider range of professional skills and experiences both within and outside of academic research. The next deadline for REDI is Oct. 18, so summer is a great time to begin planning your applications.

Funding opportunities for early-career researchers

Through REDI, NIA aims to enhance and expand our diverse career opportunities for early-career scientists working in the fields of aging and aging-related diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease. The two major REDI awards are:

REDI: Mentored Entrepreneurial Career Development Award ( PAR-22-227 )

This K01 award provides three to five years of support and protected time for intensive, supervised career development for postdocs or junior faculty. In addition to conducting aging research in biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences, awardees must spend part of their research training time on skill development in a REDI focus area. The goal is to support the transition to independence in a multitude of scientific career options, including but not limited to research and teaching faculty, as well as entrepreneurial, industry, science policy, and research administration positions.

  • Application Due Dates: Oct. 18, 2023; Oct. 17, 2024
  • Budget Limits: $90,000/year in salary; $50,000/year in other program-related expense

REDI: Entrepreneurship Enhancement Award ( PAR-22-226 )

This R25 award is designed to help institutions develop unique educational programs offering a broad set of career skills and knowledge relevant to REDI focus areas. Awardees will ideally offer programs that include seminars, invited lectures, networking with relevant experts or industry players, and shadowing/interning experiences. Program structures should be well tailored to the intended participant audience, which must include graduate students and/or postdocs. Programs must include instruction on how to apply these skills to the field of aging, and a diversity recruitment plan is required.

  • Letter of Intent Due Date: 30 days prior to application due date
  • Application Due Dates: Oct. 18, 2023; Oct. 17, 2024
  • Budget Limits: $250,000/year in direct costs
