This study qualitatively examined perceptions of advanced stage lung cancer patients participating in a lung cancer Rapid Tissue Donation Program and their next of kin and physicians. Through interviews, the authors found that the majority of patients joined the program to give back to research. Patients also discussed their decision to participate with family members and desire for family to receive information about the use of the tissue after their death. All participating next of kin were supportive of their family member’s decision. Physicians described the program as running smoothly but had suggestions for process improvements that would facilitate their referrals of eligible patients to the program.
