Program Overview
The Stigma and Global Health Research Program aimed to stimulate interdisciplinary, investigator-initiated research on the role of stigma in health, and how to intervene to prevent or mitigate its negative effects on the health and welfare of individuals, groups and societies worldwide. This program encouraged research across a variety of scientific disciplines including the biomedical, social and behavioral sciences, to elucidate the etiology of stigma in relation to public health, and to develop and test interventions to mitigate the negative effects of stigma on health outcomes. Studies examined stigma and public health in domestic, international and cross-cultural contexts, with an emphasis on studies relevant to global health issues.
The Stigma program received significant citation in a special section of The Lancet, Stigma and global health: developing a research agenda, in February of 2006. View a full list of Stigma Lancet citations .
