The Environmental Stressors, Brain Injuries, and Role of Glia in Neurodegeneration study section reviews applications examining how environmental factors—including toxin exposure, traumatic brain injury, and chronic stress—contribute to pathological brain aging and aging-related dementias such as ADRD. The panel also evaluates studies on the role of glia and key multi-organelle pathways in aging and neurodegeneration. This panel primarily reviews studies using in vitro, ex vivo, and animal models.

Topics

  • Environmental factors, exposure to toxins, traumatic brain injuries, and chronic stress contributing to pathological brain aging, ADRD, and other neurodegenerations.
  • Neuropsychiatric symptoms such as agitation, aggression, delusions, depression, apathy, disinhibition, etc. in combination with cognitive impairment in neurodegeneration when focus is on animals
  • Involvement of glia regulation/dysregulation in brain aging ADRD, and other neurodegenerations.
  • Dysregulation of multi-organelle pathways such ER-mitochondrial and endolysosomal interactions, cytoskeleton network in brain senescence and as underlying mechanisms of ADRD and other neurodegenerations
  • Alternative and lifestyle approaches including but not limit to diet and exercise in supporting health aging and preventing and treating ADRD.
