This article describes how the Emory Goizueta Alzheimer's Disease Research Center implemented targeted community-based outreach programs to boost enrollment of historically underrepresented populations in longitudinal research. Researchers found that African American participants attended community events at significantly higher rates than non-Hispanic White participants before enrolling, and that African American men had the shortest time to enrollment of any race-gender group. The results demonstrate that intentional, education-focused community outreach may improve research participation among understudied populations.
