NIA’s Training and Career Development Programs include a wide variety of funding and other resources to support research scholars on their professional journey to career independence. Learn more about supplements and other training-related awards available from NIA and NIH.
Administrative Supplements for Awardees
These supplements to existing awards enable mentor-directed opportunities to foster and expand research capabilities, knowledge, and skills of trainee-candidates in aging research.
- Re-Entry, Re-Integration, and Re-Training Supplements support eligible individuals in re-entering an active research career after life events have placed their research careers on hold.
- Continuity Supplements support early career investigators and are designed to improve retention and minimize departures from the biomedical research workforce.
Research and Entrepreneurial Development Immersion (REDI)
NIA’s REDI program provides bio-entrepreneurship training to boost the number of university startups and facilitate a wider array of career opportunities for early career scientists working in the fields of aging and aging-related diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease.
- The REDI Entrepreneurship Enhancement Award (R25) promotes the development of entrepreneurial education programs that are designed to broaden the skill set of graduate students and postdocs as well as early career master’s degree, Ph.D., and Dr.P.H. scientists in fields relevant to the NIA mission.
Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Specialists’ Transition to Aging Research (GEMSSTAR)
NIA’s GEMSSTAR program aims to provide support for early career physician-scientists trained in medical or surgical specialties as well as early career dentist-scientists to launch careers as future leaders in aging- or geriatric-focused research. This R03 award is best suited to early faculty members who have recently completed their medical, surgical, or dental training in any specialty or discipline and are embarking on a career in clinical aging research in their specialty area.
Stephen I. Katz Early Stage Investigator Research Project Grant
The Katz ESI R01 award supports an innovative project in an area of science that represents a change in research direction for an early stage investigator and for which no preliminary data exist or are allowed. This award mechanism is intended to provide a unique opportunity for investigators to take their research in a completely new direction, thereby stimulating innovation and encouraging new approaches to solving problems. Sample change in research direction attachment available.
NIH Loan Repayment Program (LRP)
The NIH LRP is designed to recruit and retain highly qualified health professionals into biomedical or biobehavioral research careers by counteracting the financial pressure of higher education by repaying up to $50,000 annually of a researcher’s qualified educational debt in return for a commitment to engage in NIH mission-relevant research for a set period of time.
