On October 30-31, 2023, the National Institute on Aging's (NIA's) Division of Neuroscience hosted the "Opportunities and Challenges in the Use of Blood-Based Biomarkers in Clinical Research and Population Studies on Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and AD-Related Dementias (ADRD)" workshop. The two-day workshop featured presentations and discussions on blood-based ATN biomarkers – particularly, Abeta 42/40 ratio, total-Tau and multiple phospho-Tau peptides, and neurofilament light chain protein (NfL) - and incorporating those biomarkers into the ATN Biomarker Framework for clinical AD/ADRD research. Speakers and panelists included NIA-funded researchers and international leaders in AD/ADRD blood biomarkers, representatives from the FDA and non-profit/advocacy organizations.
