The Butler-Williams Scholars Program: The preeminent aging research career development program

Are you an early-stage investigator who is aiming to become an independent scientist working in aging research? Then consider giving your career a kick-start by applying to the NIA 2024 Butler-Williams (B-W) Scholars Program by April 19!

B-W Scholars Program participants can enhance their research skills and glean inspiration from successful scientists who are leading exciting projects. The program is designed to improve understanding of NIA-funded science and available career development and training awards, hone essential grant writing and application skills, and energize professional networks. The intensive B-W Scholars Program experience is tailored for researchers pursuing a career development award or their first R01. The program is also open to early-stage scientists from non-aging-related fields who are interested in transitioning into independent careers in aging research.

The B-W Scholars Program is led by the NIA Office of Special Populations as a crucial component of the institution’s efforts to promote rigorous aging research and address health disparities. Since its inception, the B-W Scholars Program has produced an engaged alumni network across the United States comprised of individuals who have built successful aging research careers, obtained NIH funding, and secured key leadership roles.

An immersive curriculum

The immersive B-W Scholars Program curriculum blends seminars, presentations, small group discussions, and networking. Participants will connect with NIA leadership, scientific review and program staff, and NIA-supported researchers. The 2024 curriculum will cover:

  • Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias
  • Application of the NIA Health Disparities Framework in the development of a new study
  • Basic biology of aging
  • Behavioral and social science research
  • Geriatrics and clinical gerontology
  • Guidance on developing research interests
  • Minority health, health disparities, and advancing health equity
  • Mock scientific review of grant applications
  • Neuroscience of aging
  • Overview of NIA career development awards
  • Preparation and submission of research grant applications

Apply by April 19 to save your summer spot!

The 2024 B-W Scholars Program will be held Aug. 21-23. Interested investigators must apply by the April 19 deadline . Participation is free and travel costs are covered for successful applicants.

Qualified applicants must hold a doctoral degree (Dr.P.H., Ph.D., M.D., etc.), be currently involved in or actively considering a move to the field of aging research, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Researchers from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups; individuals with disabilities; women; and/or individuals with an interest in minority health, eliminating health disparities, and advancing health equity through aging research are especially encouraged to apply.
