Fundamental Causes of Barriers to Participation in Alzheimer's Clinical Research Among African Americans

This article describes the results from five focus groups that were conducted with a group of African American men and women aged 50 and over. Researchers found themes that influence African American beliefs about participation in clinical research, including experiences of racism and cultural trauma due to historical events and contemporary experiences. Additionally, participants expressed that health care workers and researchers involved in the recruitment efforts and studies themselves often were not African American and lacked cultural competency.
