NIA Small Business Sample Applications

Notice

The SBIR and STTR programs were reauthorized on April 13, 2026. Currently, NIH has no active SBIR or STTR Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs). Future NOFOs are forecasted at Grants.gov prior to opening for applications. The next standard receipt date is September 5, 2026.

Through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, NIA aims to help small businesses develop effective treatments and interventions for healthy aging.

NIA only considers strong applications for funding. Several of the examples below include unsuccessful original submissions as well as funded resubmissions that sufficiently addressed feedback from NIH’s rigorous peer-review process. NIH small business funding is a competitive process, and resubmissions are a common and important part of the award process.

On May 25, 2024, new NIH guidance for resubmission applications takes effect ( NOT-OD-24-061 ). Applicants should not use markups to identify changes from a previous application. Markups include but are not limited to bracketing, indenting, highlighting, bolding, italicizing, and underlining as well as use of margin lines and changes in typography, font, or font color. Applicants should outline changes to a resubmission application in the Introduction attachment only.

NOT-OD-24-061 replaces previous NIH guidance on marking changes in resubmission applications. Applicants should contact the NIA Small Business Programs before resubmitting an application for consideration.
