Summary of Key Accomplishments
NIH supports research tools and biomarkers to detect vascular cognitive impairment (VCID) in diverse populations that can be used in clinical trials. Diverse-VCID is an NINDS funded 6-year national study of 2,250 Americans from diverse backgrounds to understand the role that cerebrovascular disease plays in developing Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Multiple clinical sites throughout the country with expertise in recruitment and retention of ethnic/racial minority adult participants have been selected. Diverse-VCID uses advanced brain imaging and blood-based techniques to understand how vascular changes in late life cause brain injuries that lead to cognitive decline. This project leverages resources from the NIH-funded MarkVCID initiative, which has developed and validated several VCID biomarker kits, which are designed to measure vascular changes that predict development of cognitive impairment and dementia and serve as biomarkers to test preventative therapies.
