Advancing Workforce Analysis and Research for Dementia (AWARD) Network

  • Quantify economic impact on PWD and their families and on health systems.
  • Examine factors driving the well-being and welfare of care workers as well as disparities in employment experiences to enhance retention.
  • Examine factors driving the well-being and welfare of care workers as well as disparities in employment experiences to enhance retention.
  • Develop and make accessible for research data infrastructure that supports tracking of dementia care workforce characteristics, such as education, training, diversity, experience, skills, staffing levels, service to diverse communities, and satisfaction.

Summary of Key Accomplishments

NIA funded the new Advancing Workforce Analysis and Research for Dementia (AWARD) network to develop innovative research that identifies the characteristics that the dementia care workforce will need as the population of persons living with dementia grows, and it has already established training opportunities, pilot funding and career development funding opportunities, and a direct care workforce data compendium for the research community.

Additionally, NIA recently funded the National Dementia Workforce Study that aims to build a data infrastructure that allows researchers to generate critical insights into the professional dementia care workforce and associated outcomes for PLWD and develop and expand the community of researchers focused on the professional dementia care workforce overall. Finally, NIA issued a recent funding opportunity for a new Consortium for Economic Research on AD/ADRD Prevention, Treatment, and Care to establish a collaborative research network that unites a coordinating center with a set of meritorious research projects, all working towards creating and disseminating an evidence-base for enhancing AD/ADRD prevention, treatment, and care. Topics anticipated to be covered by the consortium include a focus on economic research on the dementia care workforce (e.g., economic and labor market factors that impact the recruitment, training, and retention of healthcare workers in the dementia care workforce).

The key accomplishments summary is current as of July 2022.
