Drug Development/Novel Targets: Establish research database

Establish a searchable, open access research database that contains all clinical, biomarker, and epidemiological data, and related genotypes and phenotypes from existing genetic studies; analyze these data to identify regions of the genome that are targets for AD and ADRD therapeutics.

Summary of Key Accomplishments

Through a series of targeted funding initiatives, NIA established and continues to support the NIA Alzheimer's Disease Data Storage Site (NIAGADS) as the national genetics repository. NIAGADS provides high quality genetic and genomic data for the study of the complex genetics of late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

NIAGADS currently hosts genetic data from over 30,000 individuals with AD, other dementias of aging and cognitively normal individuals. The genetic discoveries to date have led to the identification of multiple disease pathways and genes that are being pursued as drug targets for AD (e.g., TREM2, PU.1, PLCG2 and INPP5D).

The key accomplishments summary is current as of March 2022.
