This article reviews the evidence that supports strategies to recruit and retain rural patients in behavioral intervention trials aimed at promoting self-management of cardiovascular disease and its risk factors. To overcome community-, research- and patient-related barriers (such as lack of transportation and remote distances), the investigators of the reviewed studies developed and implemented strategies to promote community engagement with research, improve the research process, increase patients’ desire to enroll in research projects, and improve access to research.
