The Cytokine Interest Group brings together NIH and FDA scientists from many different areas working with cytokines as mediators of immune processes. It provides a platform for establishing networks for the exchange of ideas and reagents. Its activities comprise:
- Minisymposia: The group sponsors day-long minisymposia 3-4 times every year on cutting edge topics in cytokine research. These meetings include one or two invited talks, but primarily showcase intramural cytokine research and provide a platform for postdoctoral fellows to present their work alongside senior investigators. These meetings facilitate collaboration between groups. Recent symposia titles have included: “Cytokines in human disease pathogenesis and therapeutics”, “IL-17 and IL-23 in autoimmunity, “IL-15: Basic Research and Clinical Applications” “The IL-10 family of cytokines”, “Alternative macrophage activation in health and disease”, and Cytokines in Neuroimmunology”. The minisymposia are organized by a team of 2-3 NIH/FDA scientists.
- Best Paper in Cytokine Research award: The CIG also sponsors a yearly award for the “Best cytokine-related research publication” for postdoctoral fellows working at the NIH and FDA. Work must have been performed while the Fellow is/was at the NIH/FDA. The papers are ranked by the members of the CIG steering committee. The winning authors are presented with a plaque during our spring symposium and, if still at the NIH/FDA, a travel award to help them attend a scientific conference. There is great interest in this highly competitive award among the postdoctoral fellow community. The CIG steering committee is formed by NIH/FDA scientists at different career stages and meets quarterly.
