AI/AN-Specific NOFOs
American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN)-specific Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs) directly support AI/AN populations and Tribal health research. Read below to learn more about the programs that promote these funding opportunities.
Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH)
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) and many other NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices have partnered with the Indian Health Service (IHS) to support the Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH). The program aims to support health research projects selected and prioritized by American Indians and Alaska Natives, provides the framework for sustainability of research within Tribal communities, and more.
Research with Tribal Epidemiology Centers (TECs)
The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) leads a NIH-wide initiative to support collaborative research between Tribal Epidemiology Centers (TECs) and extramural investigators on health disparities in American Indian and Alaska Native populations. The program invites observational studies or evaluations of interventions that use data collected from TECs, with an emphasis on areas where there are significant gaps in data and knowledge.
Intervention Research to Improve Native American Health (IRINAH)
The Intervention Research to Improve Native American Health (IRINAH) is a NIH-funded network of investigators and their partners that develops, adapts, and tests the effectiveness of health-promotion and disease-prevention interventions in American Indian and Alaska Native populations. IRINAH aims to improve health and lengthen life in Native communities and provide a forum for discussions on challenges and opportunities.
Intervention Spotlight on N CREW
A new research opportunity will support Tribes and Native American Serving Organizations (T/NASOs) to conduct locally prioritized research to address overdose, substance use, or pain, and related factors such as mental health and wellness. Part of the NIH HEAL Initiative®, the Native Collective Research Effort to Enhance Wellness (N CREW) Program is a highly collaborative partnership between NIH, T/NASOs, and Aly organizations. N CREW was established to directly respond to priorities identified in Tribal Consultations for addressing the drug overdose and addiction public health emergency.

Tribal Institutional Review Board Establishment and Enhancement (TIRBEE)
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) supports the Tribal Institutional Review Board Establishment and Enhancement (TIRBEE) award, which was designed to support federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribes, Tribal colleges and universities, Tribal health programs, or Tribal organizations (collectively, eligible Tribal entities) to establish Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) or enhance the capacity of existing Tribal IRBs.
Tribal Undergraduate to Graduate Research Training and Leadership Experiences (TURTLE)
The Tribal Undergraduate to Graduate Research Training and Leadership Experiences (TURTLE) program funds federally recognized AI/AN Tribes, Tribal colleges or universities, Tribal health programs, and Tribal organizations to conduct research on AI/AN health and health disparities.
The PAR-24-235 grant supports educational activities that foster a better understanding of biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research and its implications. Learn more about TURTLE PAR-24-235
The PAR-24-236 grant supports research education activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research. Learn more about TURTLE PAR-24-236
AI/AN-Relevant NOFOs
American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN)-applicable Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs) focus on topics that indirectly support AI/AN populations and Tribal health research but were not specifically designed for Tribal communities. Topics of focus can include health equity, underrepresented populations, health disparities, and more. Read below to learn more about the programs that promote these funding opportunities.
Advancing Research Careers (ARC) Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Transition Award to Promote Broad Participation (F99/K00 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
The purpose of the Advancing Research Careers (ARC) program is to support cohorts of promising, late-stage graduate students from diverse backgrounds pursuing research training in NIH mission areas. The program has two components: an individual predoctoral-to-postdoctoral transition award (F99/K00) and a research education cooperative agreement (UE5) awarded to organizations to provide F99/K00 fellows with additional mentoring, networking and professional development activities to support their transition to and success in mentored postdoctoral research positions. This NOFO supports the F99/K00 component of the ARC program.
Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)
The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to support studies that will identify, develop, and/or test strategies for overcoming barriers to the adoption, adaptation, integration, sustainability, scale-up, and spread of evidence-based interventions, practices, programs, tools, treatments, guidelines, and policies (hereafter referred to as evidence-based interventions). Studies that promote equitable dissemination and implementation of evidence-based interventions among underrepresented communities are encouraged.

Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health (R21 Clinical Trial Optional)
The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to support studies that will identify, develop, and/or test strategies for overcoming barriers to the adoption, adaptation, integration, sustainability, scale-up, and spread of evidence-based interventions, practices, programs, tools, treatments, guidelines, and policies (herein referred to collectively as evidence-based interventions). Studies that promote equitable dissemination and implementation of evidence-based interventions among underrepresented communities are encouraged.

Research With Activities Related to Diversity (ReWARD) (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)
The NIH Research With Activities Related to Diversity (ReWARD) program provides support for the health-related research of scientists who are making a significant contribution to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) and who have no current NIH research project grant funding. The ReWARD program provides funding for both the scientific research and the DEIA activities of investigators.
Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions (R15 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
The purpose of this Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions is to support small scale research grants at institutions that do not receive substantial funding from the NIH, with an emphasis on providing biomedical research experiences primarily for undergraduate students, and enhancing the research environment at applicant institutions.
Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health (R03 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) will support studies that will identify, develop, and/or test strategies for overcoming barriers to the adoption, adaptation, integration, sustainability, scale-up, and spread of evidence-based interventions, practices, programs, tools, treatments, guidelines, and policies (herein referred to collectively as evidence-based interventions). Studies that promote equitable dissemination and implementation of evidence-based interventions among underrepresented communities are encouraged.
