Infectious diseases information and resources

INTRO OPTION 1 from Katrina Quinn's draft:
Infectious diseases are endemic in many low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). These diseases comprise a huge portion of the global burden of disease, and result in high mortality rates and socioeconomic problems. Continued global health research and development in this field has never been so crucial as in this highly globalized 21st century when infectious diseases are emerging and spreading at a faster rate than ever.

INTRO OPTION 2 from GID RFA:
Infectious diseases continue to impose a tremendous health burden in resource-poor countries throughout the world, claiming millions of lives annually and inflicting severe morbidity that results in significant losses in economic productivity and social progress. Attempts to control infectious diseases endemic to developing countries suffer due to an incomplete understanding of the pathogens, disease manifestations and transmission mechanisms; inadequate preventive measures and interventions; and inadequate health services and disease control efforts.

Fogarty and NIH support research related to established infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS , malaria , rotavirus and tuberculosis (TB) ; emerging threats, such as Ebola virus disease and Zika virus ; and infectious infectious neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) .

At NIH, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) leads infectious disease research and research training efforts. In addition, Fogarty supports infectious disease research through its Global Infectious Disease and HIV Research Training programs; the joint NIH-National Science Foundation Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases Initiative ; and specific projects across its portfolio of programs. Also, the Research and Policy for Infectious Disease Dynamics (RAPIDD) program , managed by Fogarty's Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies, works to improve mathematical modeling of infectious diseases, including NTDs.

[Note: We can include some or top articles on specific infectious diseases here, too. For the most part these are high level articles on ID. Maybe add the top 1-2 news articles for each of the infectious disease child topics?]
