- What is the definition of a U.S. "institution"?
An institution is defined as having an independent DUNS number or IPF (Institutional Profile File) number. If a university has multiple schools with separate DUNS numbers, they may be considered separate institutions. - Which countries are eligible as training sites?
Eligible countries are a) current list of World Bank low-income countries, b) lower-middle income countries and c) upper-middle income countries that are not in the G20. (See The World Bank Country and Lending Groups to identify countries with low- or middle-income economies.)
With the exception of sub-Saharan African countries, Fogarty will no longer accept research training or career development applications from, or research training applications that involve training of scientists from, UMICs that are also members of the G20 .
As of July 2016, this includes Brazil, China, Mexico, Russia, Turkey and European Union member countries Bulgaria and Romania.
According to information about country eligibility for Fogarty international training grants , excluded countries may contribute to training LMIC trainees from eligible countries, with a clear rationale for their inclusion as training sites. U.S. trainees cannot be trained at these sites. - Should renewal applications submit Fogarty site forms for all of the LMIC sites as if starting from scratch? Should we submit forms for all of them as part of the application?
No, but all sites must be described and justified as stated in the FOA. - What is the length of the orientation and what costs do we need to cover for this orientation (travel, accommodation, etc.)?
You should plan for four to five days (five days is safer). You pay all the costs for the trainees and faculty to attend. The awardees will develop the agenda jointly each year. - Renewals are required to submit a Progress Report in the application. Are extra pages allowed and how many?
Progress Reports are uploaded as separate attachments outside the 25 page limit for the Research Plan. Consult ERA Commons regarding any page limits if unclear from the instructions. - Can we include more than four U.S. universities in the consortium?
No, only up to four lead U.S. institutions are permitted. However, with a clear rationale for their inclusion you may include 'associated' U.S. institutions that may provide a pipeline of trainee candidates. These "associated" institutions should not require additional administrative costs to the consortium nor be considered part of the core leadership. - Are research hospitals considered "academic institutions"?
Yes, if they train clinical fellows and receive research grants.
