Focus on cancer: NIH supports cancer research to reduce disease burden Fogarty and NIH partners are supporting numerous projects to stem the tide of cancer in LMICs by improving cost-effective and practical diagnostic tools and treatment options, exploring genomics research, studying tobacco cessation approaches and deploying mobile technology solutions. >> Overview article Research, technology fight cancer in LMIC women Nearly 90 percent of global deaths from cervical cancer and 60 percent of breast cancer mortalities occur in LMICs, where cancer is more common in women than men. Vietnam project studies text messages to curb smoking Researchers supported by Fogarty are studying the use of text messages to reduce tobacco use in Vietnam Global studies show single dose of HPV vax protects Results from research conducted in Costa Rica have helped show that a single dose of the HPV vaccine may provide protection. Fogarty and NIH have catalyzed cancer research in Malawi Support from the Medical Education Partnership Initiative, as well as from NIH and Fogarty, has helped catalyze cancer research in Malawi. Training cancer researchers in Malawi Dr. Tamiwe Tomoka of the Malawi Cancer Consortium discusses how training supported by Fogarty and NIH shaped her career, and helped improve cancer disagnosis and treatment in her country.
