The
- Advance research that examines the multiple biological, behavioral, social, structural, and environmental factors that influence the health of women, as well as the intersections of these factors.
- Improve data science and data management practices with innovative research methods, measurements, and cutting-edge technologies to prevent and treat conditions affecting women.
- Foster women scientists’ career development and promote scientific workforce training and education that advances the health of women and the science of sex and gender influences.
- Support the basic and translational study of the biology underlying sex influences and its intersection with disease and health preservation in women across the life course.
- Advance community-engaged science across the research and practice continuum and enhance the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based solutions to improve the health of women.
The Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) employed a data-driven, iterative process to develop this strategic plan, while gathering information from many sources, contributors, and activities during the past several years. Various stakeholders, including representatives from NIH institutes, centers, and offices (ICOs); federal partners; and other community partners actively contributed to the plan’s development and finalization.

A Vision for 2020 for Women's Health Research
Moving into the Future with New Dimensions and Strategies for Women’s Health Research: A Vision for 2020 for Women’s Health Research is the NIH strategic plan for women’s health and sex/gender differences research.
As the third NIH scientific agenda for women’s health coordinated by ORWH and released in September 2010, this plan is the product of a highly interactive scientific and public partnership involving more than 1,500 leading scientists; women’s health advocates; public policy experts; health care providers; federal, state, and local elected officials; and the general public.
