FY 2020 Major Changes in Budget Request

Major changes by budget mechanism and/or budget activity detail are briefly described below. Note that there may be overlap between budget mechanisms and activity detail, and these highlights will not sum to the total change for the FY 2020 President's Budget request for NIA, which is $2,654.1 million, a decrease of $429.3 million from the FY 2019 Enacted level. The FY 2020 President's Budget reflects the Administration's fiscal policy goals for the Federal Government. Within that framework, NIA will pursue its highest research priorities through strategic investments and careful stewardship of appropriated funds.

Non-Competing Research Project Grants (+479.7 million; total $1,515.2 million):

NIA will continue to support its established commitment base for non-competing Research Project Grants (RPGs) awarding a total of 1,836 RPGs, an increase of 588 from FY 2019. This increase is based on an increased number of RPGs that NIA approved during previous fiscal years.

Competing Research Project Grants (-785.6 million; total $279.3 million):

NIA will award a total of 366 RPGs, a decrease of 848 from FY 2019. NIA will continue to support its commitment base for competing RPGs. The decrease in competing RPGs is based on the transition of previously awarded RPGs into non-competing status.

Research Centers (-$12.9 million; total $148.8 million):

NIA will award a total of 166 Research Centers, a decrease of 14 from FY 2019. NIA will identify savings and reductions in Research Centers in order to award more RPGs.
