Utilities Distribution Utilities generated by the Central Utility Plant are distributed underground to NIH Bethesda Campus buildings. The utility distribution system has over: 300 manholes located around the campus that allow inspections and maintenance of the underground utilities 2 miles of walkable tunnels and 2 miles of concrete trench 3.6 miles of natural gas lines and 12 miles of domestic water lines 7 miles of steam and chilled water pipelines
